Industry heavyweights partner to assuage public concerns over AI29.09.2016
Amazon, Google, Facebook, IBM and Microsoft have partnered to create a non-profit organisation to help better public understanding of artificial intelligence technologies (AI) and formulate best practices.
Several senior academics and industry leaders – from physicist Stephen Hawking to Microsoft founder Bill Gates – have issued warnings that the development of AI represents a threat to the future of the human race.
The board, which will be named the Partnership on Artificial Intelligence to Benefit People and Society (Partnership on AI), will consist of academics, non-profits and specialists in policy and ethics, with the objective to address opportunities and challenges with AI technologies.
The organisation will conduct research, recommend best practices and publish research under an open license in areas such as ethics, fairness and inclusivity.
Founding members will each contribute financial and research resources to the partnership and will share leadership with independent third-parties, with equal representation of corporate and non-corporate members on the board.
The partnership is in talks with professional and scientific organisations, with the hopes of adding new participants in the near future.
“AI technologies hold tremendous potential to improve many aspects of life, ranging from healthcare, education, and manufacturing to home automation and transportation,” read a statement released by the new partnership.
“Through rigorous research, the development of best practices, and an open and transparent dialogue, the founding members of the Partnership on AI hope to maximise this potential and ensure it benefits as many people as possible.”
