Instagram rebrands with new sunset logo

Facebook-owned social media network Instagram has ditched its retro logo for a sunset-coloured update on the retro Polaroid camera, and a raft of coordinated symbols for connected apps.

The new logo, which was announced via a blog post and a short film, aims to reflect the “vibrant and diverse” storytelling posted on the photo sharing platform, which features over 80m photos and videos every day.

The blog argues that the old logo, which adhered to an old fashion camera to look like an app’s real life inspiration, was “no longer reflective of the community”.

The logo, which has received a mix response on social media, is designed to match the updated design for companion apps Boomerang, Hyperlapse and Layout. In-app changes have also been made, including a flatter design and some colour changes, with font now in black and notifications in red.

“Thank you for giving this community its life and colour,” concludes the blog. “You make Instagram a place to discover the wonder in the world. Every photo and video — from the littlest things to the most epic — opens a window for people to broaden their experiences and connect in new ways.”
