Twitter to exclude photos and links from 140-character limit17.05.2016
Following proposals earlier this year to ditch the 140-character limit, Twitter has now told Bloomberg news that it may make a major shift in how it counts character.
According to a “person familiar with the matter”, the social media platform intends to stop counting photos and links – which can take up to 23 characters – as part of the limit within the next two weeks, in order to give users more flexibility.
In January 2016, chief executive officer Jack Dorsey said the company was looking for new ways to display text. The limit, which was originally developed as a way to fit all the information within a mobile text message, was debuted in 2006 before the advent of smartphones.
However, suggestions earlier in the year to raise the limit to 10,000 characters along with an algorithmic timeline, heralded the #RIPTwitter campaign where users took to the platform to voice their concerns over the proposed changes.
Twitter has since been focusing on video as part of a push for live events, such as Cadbury’s campaign for Eurovision and its NFL partnership, with more said to be in the pipeline.
